This tutorial walking through how to boot Windows PC in Safe mode using MSConfig. Safe mode is a diagnostic mode of a computer operating system. An operating system in safe mode will have reduced functionality, but the task of isolating problems is easier because many non-core components are disabled. This tutorial includes 2 main steps.

2. Boot in safe mode.

1. Open and Configure “MSConfig”.

In Windows 10 and Windows 8, right-click or tap-and-hold on the Start button, and then choose Run. See Tip #1 below for a couple of shortcuts.
Windows 7 and Windows Vista, click on the Start button.
In Windows XP, click on Start and then click Run.
Type “msconfig” in the text box.

Tap or click on the OK button, or press Enter. Click or tap on the Boot tab located at the top of the System Configuration window.

The radio buttons under the boot options start the various other modes of Safe Mode:

Minimal: Starts the standard Safe Mode
Alternate shell: Starts Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Active Directory repair: Safe Mode for Active Directory domain repair.
Network: Starts Safe Mode with Networking

Select Minimal Safe boot and click or tap on OK.
